 Reading:

We approach our reading curriculum through a balanced literacy approach. The standards that we teach are aligned with the district guidelines and the Common Core standards. Students are involved in interactive and shared writing, interactive and shared reading, direct phonics/word study instruction, poetry, and guided reading groups. All of these activities occur on a daily basis to give our students the best chase to succeed as a reader.

Writing:

Our writing curriculum includes 4 main topics of instruction. The students will explore with writing personal narrative, nonfiction, opinion, and fiction pieces. We use the Lucy Calkins writing units to facilitate our instruction.

Math:

Our math curriculum is also aligned to the common core standards. We are currently using the Envision math series in the classroom. In first grade the students  focus on number sense, geometry, fractions, telling time, and basic measurement.

Science and Social Studies:

In first grade we begin to explore basic science concepts such as seasonal changes, plants and animals,  the benefits of the sun, and Ohio animals. In social studies we focus on map skills, basic landforms, life then and now, and basic economics.
